Bruce Munro to bring stunning Light-Towers installation to Central Australia

‘Game-changer for tourism’: A world-renowned artist is preparing to launch another spectacular display at a Central Australian resort.

The Red Centre will be transformed into a palette of colours when world-renowned light artist Bruce Munro returns to the desert.

The British-Australian behind the magnificent Field of Light installation at Uluru will be back in the desert next year with Light-Towers, a spectacular multi-colour show at Kings Canyon resort in Watarrka National Park.

Famous worldwide for his spectacular light displays, Mr Munro installed the popular Tropical Light exhibition in Darwin in 2019 which captivated Top End audiences and visitors to the city.

The Field of Light exhibition at Uluru gained worldwide attention when it opened in 2016.

It is still credited with driving a significant surge in visitor numbers to Central Australia and Uluru.

Brought to the Territory by Kings Canyon resort owners The G’Day Group, Light-Towers consists of 69, 2m towers that change colour in response to music broadcast within each unit.

Mr Munro first visited Central Australia in 1992 and was directed to Watarrka National Park by another traveller who’d spent time there.

“Our first trip was memorable because the road was unmade and we wondered if we had been sent on a wild-goose chase, but thankfully it was just as it had been described,” Mr Munro said.

“I was astounded to see fossils of a seabed at the top of the gorge – the notion that Australia was under the sea was and still is mind blowing.

“The Red Centre really puts geological time into perspective and shows us how small and short our lives are. Every time I visit, I learn new things and it’s an infinite natural resource of inspiration.”

Tourism Central Australia chief executive Danial Rochford congratulated The G’Day Group for bringing Mr Munro back to Central Australia.

“Field of Lights is a major drawcard to Central Australia and as part of the overall experience to Uluru,” Mr Rochford said.

“The proposal The G’day Group has announced is a game-changer for tourism in Central Australia and to have this installation put in place is certainly going to put the Kings Canyon area firmly in Australia’s eye.

“It certainly is part of a wider strategy to improve the visitor experience across the region and we’re really thankful for The G’day Group’s leadership when it comes to this. Kings Canyon is one of the gems of our region and this will be yet another reason to visit the Red Centre.”

About five hours drive southwest of Alice Springs, Kings Canyon is one of about 300 parks managed by The G’Day Group.

G’Day’s executive officer Grant Wilckens said the installation would give domestic and international visitors another reason to visit Kings Canyon following the recent completion of the first stage of $22m in planned works at the property.

“A visit to the Field of Light in Uluru is now considered ubiquitous with a trip to Central Australia,” Mr Wilckens said.

“The installation of Light-Towers here at Kings Canyon is a way of celebrating G’day Group’s growing footprint and continued investment in the Red Centre, as well as a commitment to showcasing thought-provoking arts and culture as part of our property’s offering.”

Installation work is expected to begin early next year, with Light Towers to open in April 2023.
