Aussie who fell in Croatia shocks doctors with recovery progress

A young Aussie man plunged several metres from a fence in Croatia leaving him with a suspected brain injury – but he’s now left doctors stunned.

An Australian man is expected to make a full recovery after he plunged several metres from a fence while on holiday in Croatia.

Nicholas Jakovcevic, 20, from Sydney, was in the tiny village of Donji Humac as part of festivities celebrating its patron Saint Ana, when tragedy struck at 3am on July 27.

He was airlifted to KBC Spilt hospital and placed in the intensive care unit after suffering head injuries and a concussion.

Doctors feared for his life, however, he is now expected to make a full recovery.

“He has surprised doctors with a fast recovery”, a hospital source told the source told The Daily Telegraph.

“He is undertaking some additional checks but we expect he will leave hospital in next few days.”

The publication reported Nicholas didn’t require an operation, but stayed under medical observation for additional checks.

“It seems the fence got broken and he fell down and got his head injured,” an islander who attended Saint Ana’s festivities told The Daily Telegraph.

“It was near the island’s most famous traditional food restaurant Kopacina in Donji Humac.”

The young man was, who was described by Brac local’s as a ‘nice Aussie guy’, was also in the village for the festivities.

The large celebration takes place on July 26 each year near the village’s hilltop church where motor vehicles are blessed. It also includes local food and live music.

Police are investigating how Nicholas, one of whose parents is understood to be from the island, fell from the fence.

The island of Brac’s population is 13,000, but just 177 live in the tiny village of Donji Humac. Brac is 50 minutes by ferry from Split.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson told news.com.au it is providing consular assistance to an Australian man hospitalised in Croatia.
