An Australian man is fighting for his life after a horror motorbike accident in Bali.
Daniel Quinn, from Sydney, was just one week into his two-week trip in Seminyak when things took a shocking turn.
His mother Lesley had received a phone call on August 2 from her distraught daughter saying Daniel had been involved in an accident.
The family had no idea of the extent of what had happened until Lesley and her husband Don were required to sign documents in order for doctors to perform lifesaving surgery.
Daniel, who had turned 30 on the day of the accident, was allegedly found face down with his motorbike five metres away, by a group of his friends.
There was no one else believed to be involved in the accident.
Lesley said her son sustained a blood clot on the front of his brain which was causing pressure and pushing his brain down on the base of his skull — because of this he lost consciousness and the ability to breathe.
He was rushed to BIMC Hospital Kuta where lifesaving evacuation craniotomy and cranioplasty surgery was preformed.
Daniel has since had further surgery on his face to relieve pressure on his optic nerve to stop potential blindness. He’s also had part of his face reconstructed including his nose and skin grafting on his lips.
“It’s a parent’s worst nightmare,” Lesley told news.com.au from Bali.
“I had gone for a morning walk and coffee with a girlfriend when my daughter phoned me.
“She was incoherent. I couldn’t understand a word she was saying. After I calmed her down she explained Steven, a friend of Daniel’s had contacted her through Messenger that Daniel had been involved in an accident.”
Lesley immediately phoned her husband Don and the pair jumped on the first flight to Bali.
“It was just horrific,” she said.
“His friends were sending papers that we had to sign before they could do any treatments and that’s when we realised the extent of his injuries.
“His brain surgery took place while we were on the flight and we didn’t know what to expect until we got there.
“I also just wanted to thank the Virgin Australia staff who really looked after us after we explained what had happened. They made sure we got off the plane first while airport security in Bali put us through and processed us in the line quickly.”
Lesley said her heart just dropped when she saw Daniel for the first time in hospital.
“His head is all bandaged up after having surgery to remove the blood clot on his brain. “He’s hooked up to a breathing ventilator. He has tubes coming out of every limb.
“It’s been a nightmare.”
She said August 2 is “forever engraved in my mind” as I not only the day she thought she might have lost her son, but also the thought she wouldn’t be able to celebrate his milestone 30th birthday which the incident occurred on.
Chillingly, Lesley said she had sent Daniel a text earlier that day wishing him a happy birthday.
“I told him to take care and to please come home in one piece particularly in Bali with the traffic situation,” she said.
“(As a parent) you always think ‘Oh God please be OK’.”
But to her shock and horror, he was not OK.
Instead, she experienced every parent’s worst nightmare — “Being told your child has had a traumatic head injury and requires life saving surgery.”
“Bad enough if this occurred at home but it’s happened in a foreign country.”
The family are currently waiting on next steps including how long Daniel will need to remain in ICU and when they can bring him back home to Australia.
They have started a GoFundMe to help with rising medical costs, with hospital fees around $4000 a day.
“Our hands are tied as in Bali no surgery is done without payment first,” Lesley said.
So far they have raised $84,950.
”It’s very humbling to see the amazing amount of support by everyone. The money is all for our son’s long road to recovery. It’s so, so generous and we are blessed to see people care so much about him.
“It’s truly life-changing.”
Lesley also wanted thank BIMC Hospital Kuta for all their support during such a tough time.
