Scam GoFundMe campaign hits Block favourites Tom and Sarah-Jane

Block duo Tom and Sarah-Jane have been the target of a nasty online scam after their disastrous auction day result.

Tom and Sarah-Jane shocked by Block auction result

A mysterious GoFundMe page purportedly started by Block fans has been shut down after favourites Tom and Sarah-Jane declared it “a scam”.

Parents Tom Calleja and Sarah-Jane Wilson placed third during Sunday’s chaotic season finale despite leading the pack all season, walking away with a profit of just $20,000 – the lowest earnings since two teams in 2014 made $10,000.

On Monday, hours after the couple admitted to losing their savings on the show, a fundraiser with a goal of $1,586,670 was started to recoup some of their costs, So Dramatic! reported.

However, Sarah-Jane soon took to Instagram to clarify that the fundraiser had nothing to do with them, and they were working to get it taken down. As of Wednesday morning, the page no longer exists.

Sarah-Jane warned fans the fundraiser was not legitimate.

“Hey guys … We just found out that someone has set up a GoFundMe page for us,” she said on Instagram, via So Dramatic!

“That is not Tom and I.

“It’s a scam, Channel 9 are trying to work on getting it taken down. It is definitely not us, do not be sucked in.”

The social worker went on to say she’s “grateful for what (they) have”, and that her family did not need help from GoFundMe.

“It’s to help people that are in really sh*tty situations and that’s just not Tom and I,” she explained.

“We’re in a good situation.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the fundraiser’s description read: “Tom and SJ deserve a lot more for the efforts they put into building their house on The Block.

“Their positive attitude and willingness to call it as it was made them an instant show favourite. Let’s show them what the Aussie spirit can do and help raise funds to make a difference, set their family up and make the 12 weeks worthwhile.”

The organiser was listed as ‘SJ and Tom’ from Gladstone Park.

A total $425 of was raised as of Tuesday night, with four donations, according to the Daily Mail. By Wednesday morning, the campaign had been shut down.

A GoFundMe spokesperson told news.com.au they had been in contact with the organiser of the fundraiser for Tom and Sarah-Jane as part of the company’s “standard verification process” to “better understand their intent”.

“It is not uncommon for Australians to launch fundraisers on behalf of others, often as an act of kindness, and in these cases all funds are held until we can be sure that they will reach the right place,” the spokesperson explained, adding that the donations raised for Tom and Sarah-Jane are being “safely held”.

Despite the fundraiser being cancelled, it certainly echoed the disappointment fans felt for the hardworking couple.

On Sunday, Tom and Sarah-Jane chose to go second in the auction order, but their sprawling Gisborne property only sold for $4,100,000.99, just $20,000.99 above the $4.08 million reserve.

“It wasn’t in our future,” Sarah-Jane wept after the auction, before admitting the pair had suffered a “massive loss” due to taking so much time off work.

“Ultimate high with the boys (winners Omar and Oz) and now ultimate low. I didn’t expect to make a load of money, but I didn’t expect to come out at a massive loss too,” she said.

“It’s the way the cookie crumbles. I can’t change it. Just got to roll with it.”

Taking to Instagram in the wake of the shock result, the couple wrote: “Unfortunately for Tom we will need to sell the Ford”, referencing the $80,000 Ford Ranger they won during Landscape Week.

Meanwhile, Sydney-based friends Omar Slaimankhel & Ozman ‘Oz’ Abu Malik were crowned the winners of The Block: Tree Change after making the largest profit over reserve of all five of the houses.

Their property sold for $5,666,666 – meaning they took home a record-breaking $1.6 million in prize money.

In a distant second place were Rachel and Ryan Carr, who were also the only other contestants to win a sizeable amount of money, taking home $169,000.50.

But it was a disastrous result for Dylan Adams and Jenny Heath and Sharon Johal and Ankur Dogra, with both their houses being passed in at auction. They’re both still on the market.
