The Block’s Tom and Sarah-Jane need to sell their car after ‘disappointing’ auction
Block fan favourites Tom and Sarah-Jane have revealed the financial fallout of their “disappointing” auction result during the chaotic finale.
The Block’s Tom Calleja and Sarah-Jane Wilson have admitted they’ll need to sell their car after spending a huge chunk of their savings to appear on the show and being left with barely anything to show for it.
Viewers’ hearts broke for the couple when the winning bid on their five-bedroom, three-bathroom farmhouse-style home – which is positioned on a 10-acre block in Gisborne, country Victoria – came in at just $20,000.99 over their reserve.
Taking to Instagram in the wake of the shock result, the couple wrote: “Unfortunately for Tom we will need to sell the Ford”, referencing the $80,000 Ford Ranger they won during Landscape Week.
The emotional couple admitted to Nine the result was “disappointing”, and that they’d spent “more than $20,000 of our savings” to take part in the gruelling 12 weeks of filming.
However, they insisted they had “zero regrets” about their time on the show.
“We honestly had the best time … Even if we walked away with nothing we had the experience of a lifetime and something we can tell our grandkids about!” they wrote in a statement on Instagram on Sunday night.
Tom and Sarah-Jane’s result came as a huge shock, with the pair firmly cemented as fan favourites throughout the season and winning multiple Room Reveals.
During Sunday night’s chaotic finale, Sydney-based friends Omar Slaimankhel & Ozman ‘Oz’ Abu Malik were crowned the winners of The Block: Tree Change after making the largest profit over reserve of all five of the houses.
Their property sold for $5,666,666 – meaning they took home a record-breaking $1.6 million in prize money.
In a distant second place were Rachel and Ryan Carr, who were also the only other contestants to win a sizeable amount of money, taking home $169,000.50.
But it was a disastrous result for Dylan Adams and Jenny Heath and Sharon Johal and Ankur Dogra, with both their houses being passed in at auction. They’re both still on the market.
All five teams were given the same reserve to clear of $4.08 million, with the houses on the market for a price guide of $4 to $4.4 million.
