Before there were endless streaming options, there was classic, free-to-air Aussie TV and it was at its best in the 90s.

Whether you were a fan of Gladiators, or you stayed up late to watch Sex/Life, there were many Aussie shows that had you tuned in every week.

With Heartbreak High is getting a reboot, we asked readers what their favourite Aussie show from the 90s was, to see which might gain enough momentum for a comeback.

News.com.au’s Australia’s Favourite series asks you each week what should be crowned our country’s best.

So far you’ve told us your favourite fast food burger is the Filet-o-Fish, Mountain Dew is the best soft drink, ham and pineapple is the ultimate pizza topping, Tasty Toobs need to return, Bondi Beach is by far the most overrated in the country, and Stone & Wood Pacific Ale is your beer of choice.

The results are now in for your favourite 90s show and it’s Hey Hey, it’s Saturday with 22 per cent of the votes, closely followed by Fast Forward with 16 per cent.

And anyone who voted might be excited to know Daryl Somers has hinted at yet another comeback.

“In light of this being such a negative year for Australia and the world, I look forward to offering some positive news soon, at least for Hey Hey fans. Watch this space,” he wrote on the show’s Facebook page in December.

Someone replied that it was, “The best show EVER for entertainment”.

“Always lifted the spirits and good hearty laughs. Sigh. Ah for the good old days before political correctness sucked the life and fun out of us,” she said.

Hey Hey It’s Saturday was a long-running variety television program that initially ran for 27 years, debuting in 1971, with its last episode on November 20, 1999.

Among the list of shows to choose from was perhaps Australia’s most controversial.

A late-night adult lifestyle program, Sex/Life was aimed at a sophisticated, sexually active audience — but with its mix of informative sex education stories and occasionally salacious soft-porn visuals, arguably its most eager viewers were younger than intended.

“I was a horny 12-year-old who would furtively watch it on my dad’s Casio handheld TV in my bedroom,” someone said of the show in a reddit thread.

“I remember that just prior to it being cancelled they softened its content quite a bit which just made it thoroughly boring.

“I would love to watch it again.”

In the mid-90s we were treated to three seasons of Gladiators - a show that took weedy everyday Aussies and threw them into a giant arena to take on a select group of buff men and women in a series of physical challenges.
