Weighted blankets are everyone's new best friend. They've been around for years, but there has been a huge surge in popularity in the past few years.

Much like a big hug, weighted blankets are recommended for their calming properties, helping you to relax and destress.

But do they really work? According to sleep expert Olivia Arezzolo, studies have shown that not only can weighted blankets help you relax, they can also make you drift off to sleep more easily and have a restful slumber.

“Weighted blankets provide pressure therapy, which relaxes the body like a massage, hugging or stroking,” she told news.com.au. “This enhances the release of happiness hormones such as dopamine and serotonin, the love hormone oxytocin, and reduces stress hormone cortisol. Collectively, this makes us feel more at ease.”

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A WEIGHTED BLANKET

When choosing weighted blankets to include on our list, we evaluated several factors:

Weight: Generally, a weighted blanket should weigh approximately 10 per cent of your own body weight. This is particularly important for children, who should not use weighted blankets without adult supervision - and not at all under the age of four as it can be a suffocation risk.

Size: How do you want to use your blanket? The bigger the weighted blanket, the harder it can be too manage. If you just want to curl up under it and watch TV, then a single size might do the trick. If you want to share with your partner, you may need a queen or larger. Always check measurements before buying to save disappointment, as they can vary from brand to brand and also from weight to weight.

Colour: Does the colour work with your home decor? It needs to be able to move easily from room to room as you may want to lie in the lounge room on one day - and your bedroom the next. Different textures such as a knitted style blanket can add a touch of charm to your living space.

Material: Soft and cosy fabrics are important as you want ultimate comfort from your weighted blanket. However, you can even just pop a blanket cover or quilt cover on top so that it's comfier and matches your bed sheets.

Filling: Consider the type of weights in the blanket. They need to be sewn into evenly dispersed pockets to give equal pressure over your body. Also consider if they are weights are non-toxic, eco-friendly or particularly noisy.

Maintenance:  Washing instructions vary from blanket to blanket. Machine washable is ideal, however many are hand wash only. Some have a cover, which can be removed for easy cleaning.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO WEIGHTED BLANKETS WORK?

Sleep expert Olivia Arezzolo. Picture: Instagram/Olivia Arezzolo.
Sleep expert Olivia Arezzolo. Picture: Instagram/Olivia Arezzolo.

Olivia, who is the author of Bear, Lion or Wolf: How Understanding Your Sleep Type Could Change Your Life, says that weighted blankets can help ease the anxiety many of us feel around bedtime, as well as helping you sleep better in general.

“Research in Occupational Therapy in Mental Health found 63 per cent of participants felt less anxious and 78 per cent felt more relaxed with a weighted blanket, compared to no blanket,” she said.

“As anxiety can manifest as an inability to switch off or feeling wired, I know many Aussies will find this helpful come bedtime.

“Similarly, Journal of Sleep Medicine and Disorders found for those using weighted blankets, regardless of anxiety, slept deeper and longer compared to those without a weighted blanket.”

IS IT OKAY TO USE A WEIGHTED BLANKET EVERY NIGHT?

Weighted blankets are generally okay to use every night as long as your chosen weighted blanket is not heavier than you can manage - it's important that you are able to take it off yourself easily in case of emergencies, when you need to go to the bathroom etc.

HOW DO YOU WASH A WEIGHTED BLANKET?

Unlike regular bed linen, weighted blankets require more careful attention when cleaning. The first, most important, step is to refer to any specific cleaning instructions that come with your weighted blanket — the biggest mistake you can make when caring for your weighted blanket is not following what the label tells you to do with it.

CAN WEIGHTED BLANKETS ALLEVIATE ANXIETY AND STRESS?

Though success is dependent on the individual and their specific conditions, weighted blankets have been reported by some users to minimise effects of stress and anxiety; one of the most significant ones being loss of sleep. The considerable weight applied across the entire body emulates the treatment offered by deep pressure stimulation and massage therapy, used to relax the nervous system. However, if you’re experiencing anxiety and stress, it’s important to always speak to your GP, or a mental health professional, about the options available that could assist you.

If you or a loved one requires mental health support, please contact Lifeline by calling 13 11 14 or head here.

WHICH WEIGHT OF WEIGHTED BLANKET IS BEST?

As each person is different, it's hard to say whether a certain weight of weighted blanket is better than the other. The general rule of thumb of knowing which weighted blanket is best for you is getting a weighted blanket that is 10 per cent of your body weight - this ensures it isn't too heavy or too light, and you are able to take it off as you please. Please note: Weighted blankets are strongly discouraged for children under three years of age.

IS A 9KG WEIGHTED BLANKET TOO HEAVY?

As mentioned above, the weight of a weighted blanket depends entirely on you and your weight. It is recommended that you opt for a weighted blanket that is 10 per cent of your body weight. A 9kg weighted blanket is definitely on the heavier side - it may be great for some adults but too heavy for children.
