Notorious Porsche driver Richard Pusey has invoked the words of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky as he fought for “freedom” during his latest court appearance.

Pusey was due to apply for bail in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court this morning over allegations he posted an image of a dead police officer to the website of a Melbourne Porsche dealership.

With his hair tied up in pigtails with yellow ribbons, Pusey — who represented himself in court — borrowed a quote from the leader of Ukraine to describe his situation behind bars.

“To quote Volodymyr Zelensky, freedom must be armed no worse than tyranny,” Pusey told the court.

Zelensky’s actual words, which he made last week during a plea to the west for heavy weaponry, were: “Freedom must be armed better than tyranny”.

But Pusey’s bail application was over before it began, after the former mortgage broker claimed he was yet to receive crucial material from the prosecution.

He denied claims by prosecutor Jane Warren he had simply refused to accept the court documents when they were delivered to him in prison.

Pusey has been on remand since February, when he was charged with two counts of using a telecommunications device to menace and two counts of commit indictable offence on bail.

One of the charges alleges Pusey posted a Google review to the Porsche dealership’s website that included an image of an officer killed in the horrific Eastern Freeway crash in 2020.

During his aborted bail application, Pusey asked magistrate Jennifer Grubissa: “How long do I have to be in here before I get better?”

“Everyone says this is a rehabilitation centre, so how long until I get better?” Pusey said.

Ms Grubissa adjourned Pusey’s bail application until later this month to allow time for prosecutors to again serve him with the material.

At the conclusion of the hearing, Pusey asked if he could leave the room to “go watch re-runs of Seinfeld”.

It comes as prosecutors withdrew charges in the Neighbourhood Justice Centre last week relating to assaults on police, and throwing a missile, namely nitrous oxide, when being arrested at his home in Fitzroy on September 15 last year.

He will face court again on Wednesday for a contest mention relating to the separate menacing allegations.

Four officers – Glen Humphris, Kevin King, Lynette Taylor and Joshua Prestney – were killed when a truck ploughed into them in the emergency lane of the Eastern Freeway, where they had stopped Pusey in his Porsche for speeding.
