Melburnians are in for a weekend scorcher with Sunday tipped to be the hottest day of 2024 so far.

To date this summer, the Bureau has not classified any single day as “hot”, or above 35C, in Melbourne.

But this weekend, the mercury is expected to reach 31C on Saturday and 38C on Sunday. Strongs winds of up to 50km/h are also expected on Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Morgan Pumpa said the hot weather will be “short lived”, with a cool change in store for Monday.

“As we go into Monday we will see a drop of about 16 degrees for the maximum temperature,” she said.

“It will go from a top of 38C on Sunday to 22C on Monday due to a cold front moving across the state.

“It’s not expected to bring much in terms of showers, mostly winds of up to 30km/h.”

Ms Pumpa said the previous hottest day in Victoria this year was 33.4C on January 12, followed by 34C on December 13.

Victorians are urged to drink plenty of water, wear a hat and loose-fitting clothing, stay in airconditioned buildings and check up on sick or elderly friends and family during the heat.

Authorities are also warning to never leave kids, adults or pets in hot cars as the temperature inside parked cars can double within minutes.

The steamy weather is a change from much of December and January when wild storms battered the state, with hail, damaging winds and floods causing havoc for many Victorians.

The nightmare weather event left four families in mourning.

Two bodies were discovered in campground floodwaters in East Gippsland, while a 44-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on him at his Caringal home.

A fourth person, a young boy, was killed after being struck by a large tree branch near Shepparton following ferocious storms.
