Cancel Sam Newman?
That’s the earnest hope of Democracy in Colour, an activist group that says it’s against racism, Sam Newman, and the apparent collision of both.
The StandDownSam campaign wants podcasting service providers to end the soapbox of Newman, who has always thrilled to the notoriety of calling out what he sees as nonsense.
“It is clear that his racism and bigotry will continue unless we get Sam’s podcast removed from major podcasting services,” it says.
“In the first 24 hours over a thousand of you signed the petition, but to get Sam Newman’s racism and bigotry off the air we need to spread this petition far and wide…
“In a recent episode of his podcast, Sam Newman went on a racist, anti-voice tirade. Among other things he mocked Welcome to Country and contested the existence of First Nations history and culture. These self-serving views are steeped in racism and white supremacy.”
So, voting no to the Voice is racism?
And choosing not to tune in isn’t enough, it seems, notwithstanding that that approach used to work effectively for TV viewers who did not bask in Newman’s brand of humour and insight on The Footy Show.
Do we stand by for imminent cancellation calls for indigenous MP, Jacinta Price, and former prime minister, Tony Abbott, who have both said recently that the welcome to country bizzo is, well, a bit out of hand?
“The continuous targeting of people of colour and First Nations’ people by Sam Newman promotes dangerous views that are a risk to all of us,” the group says.
“Worse still, he makes money from this. Promoting and profiting from these views cannot continue.”
Call it a win-win.
The Source expects that more people will sign the petition.
The Source also expects that Newman will merrily talk all about claims that he is into white supremacy, racism and bigotry in his next podcast.
Toorak partygoer robbed at knifepoint
Toorak tongues are wagging after a frightening dead-of-night robbery in the affluent suburb.
And locals are puzzled about why the victim was singled out by armed bandits in the 2am stick-up in the posh neighbourhood.
The victim had been walking on Vista Grove after attending a party at the nearby mansion of a prominent businessman.
Police say the man was then approached by the three knife-wielding men.
They assaulted him while demanding he hand over his wallet and mobile phone.
Friends raised the alarm after he returned injured to the upscale gathering.
“The 45-year-old man from Toorak received non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital. Investigations remain ongoing,” a police statement read.
The Stonnington criminal investigation unit are probing the attack.
Toorak residents have been approached for CCTV as part of the inquiry.
