A five-storey mega mansion that looks like a cruiseliner from the outside is set to be built in one of Melbourne’s richest streets.

Stonnington Council has given the green light for a 10m-high luxury home in St Georges Rd, Toorak, complete with a rooftop spa and bar overlooking the Yarra River.

The multimillion-dollar plans by millionaire businessman Howard Armitage to tear down an existing property and trees on the site and build a vast dwelling with terraces sloping down to the river were unanimously backed by councillors last week.

A Notice Of a Decision Grant a Planning Permit was issued, clearing the way for a unique new Toorak landmark to be built over 1368sq m.

It will include five big bedrooms, a cabana lounge leading out to a pool, internal garage for at least six cars, a gym, steam and sauna rooms and a huge lobby.

The mansion, in one of Melbourne’s wealthiest pockets, will also feature a carpark with turntable on the middle level.

Stonnington Councillor Matthew Koce said it was a “well considered development for that site”.

“It fits with the Yarra River environs, vegetation is all fine, the landscaping design is fine,’’ he said.

“It just ticks all the boxes and it’s really easy to approve something like this one.’’

The mansion will be built into the slope of the land, with steps leading down to a private river jetty.

The existing mansion, bought for $6.2m in 2017, will be demolished to make way for the cruise liner development.

Three public objections were made against the proposal and at least 35 trees were to be removed from the site.

But town planners supported the proposal because the house would be “well recessed from the Yarra River and has a stepped setback from the river frontage’’.

“The proposed design response is a contemporary design that responds to the topography of the site,’’ a report to the council said.

Councillor Marcia Griffin said the proposed mansion “represents itself well to St George’s Rd”.

“It is beautifully designed,’’ she said.

The property was purchased by Mr Armitage for $6.2m in 2017.

Several companies registered in his name also list a separate St Georges Rd address as their base.
