Putting the squeeze on Victoria’s movers, shakers and headline makers
Its 10 bedrooms were not the only unusual feature when 35 Brunswick St, Fitzroy, went under the hammer last Saturday.
It turns out the massive property had a very interesting backstory related to a big CBD gold robbery faked by two men.
Victoria Police’s criminal proceeds squad seized the former boarding house some years ago after a major investigation by the armed crime squad.
That related to an April, 2020, bullion hold-up at a Collins St gold store.
Karl Kachami, one of the men jailed over the bungled heist, once owned the Fitzroy terrace.
He walked out of the store with 28kg of gold and $700,000 in cash after pretending to carry out a stick-up on an accomplice who worked there.
The whole thing – later described as an “amateur” endeavour – quickly unravelled, resulting in the arrest of Kachami.
That allowed police to swoop on the terrace after he was convicted and jailed.
One oddball element of the investigation was when police visited a tiny South Gippsland settlement called Dollar. There they dug up a large stash of gold and jewellery.
Anyway, back to Brunswick St, which was passed in at auction on Saturday and is now up for private sale at $2.6 million.
