Bradley Murdoch gets bizarre character rehabilitation by true crime author on ABC

When Australia’s true crime queen appeared on TV to talk about the death of Peter Falconio’s killer, the interview was awkwardly short-lived.

Putting the squeeze on Victoria’s movers, shakers and headline makers.

She’s described as Australia’s literary true crime queen.

But there was a sudden twist of case closed when author Robin Bowles appeared on ABC News Breakfast on Wednesday to discuss the death of backpacker killer Bradley John Murdoch.

Murdoch, who was serving a life sentence in prison for the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio, died from throat cancer on Tuesday night.

Bowles wrote Dead Centre about the Falconio murder, having spent 60 hours interviewing Murdoch in prison for her book.

On Wednesday, to the apparent dismay of ABC News Breakfast host James Glenday, Bowles described Murdoch as a “gentle giant” in response to his first question about the murderer.

It’s a lovely bit of alliteration Bowles has used in the past, echoing the statement Murdoch’s family released after his death.

After that glowing reference, Glenday only asked one more question, before wrapping up the interview. The hosts were awkwardly left to make it clear that Murdoch was not, in fact, a good guy.

But an ABC-TV spokesperson maintained the interview “was not cut short”.

“ABC News Breakfast asked two questions of Robin Bowles, including one after that (gentle giant) comment was made,” the spokesperson said.
