Inner Melbourne’s newest fresh food market is set to officially open with the $70 million redevelopment of a carpark.

Market Lane at Docklands will have 20 specialty stores, including a major Asian grocer, as well as full-line Woolworths and Dan Murphy’s outlets.

Located at The District Docklands near Melbourne Observation Wheel, the 10,000 sqm market precinct has started operating with the official launch to occur on Thursday.

It is being billed as the biggest and most accessible supermarket-based fresh food market within 5km of the CBD.

The District Docklands CEO George Karabatsos said the market had an urban feel and look in a rapidly growing area.

“The market will become the heart of our urban village,” he told the Sunday Herald Sun.

Mr Karabatsos said Market Lane aimed to cater for the estimated 10,000 residences and 65,000 office workers based around Victoria Harbour.

“Part of our strategic view is creating the amenity for that harbour, and the growth that we’re seeing on the western side of the CBD,” he said.

Market Lane also features The Humble Baker, The Butcher Club, a pharmacy and MarketPlace Fresh.

Empire Asian Supermarket and several eateries are due to open by Christmas.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp, who recently moved to Docklands, welcomed the investment.

“Market Lane will provide Docklands’ locals extra choice for fresh produce and gourmet foods,” she said.

Originally called Harbour Town, The District Docklands has evolved amid a $150 million revamp by owner Ashe Morgan.

The integrated retail, entertainment and leisure precinct includes Hoyts cinemas, Archie Brothers’ Cirque Electriq and Urban Alley Brewery.

Mr Karabatsos said The District had about 30 restaurants and casual dining places and over 80 retail brands under a broader strategy to be a tourism and leisure destination for Melburnians and visitors.

An “augmented reality” attraction from a global provider, which will be a first for Australia, is set to be announced in coming weeks.

Market Lane will be ceremonially launched on Thursday by Deputy Lord Mayor Arron Wood, while a public celebration will be held next weekend.
