A DOCKLANDS carpark is to be transformed into a food precinct.

East Car Park will have its ground floor and mezzanine level turned into a marketplace with 25 retailers.

Called The Market, the project is part of the $150 million The District Docklands redevelopment near the Melbourne Star wheel.

It will host butchers, delis, bakers, cafes and also feature a Woolworths supermarket, Dan Murphy’s outlet, a Priceline, an Asian grocer and a medical centre.

The design by NH Architecture and Esquisse, it’s inspired by New York’s Chelsea markets and includes historic items, street art and concrete flooring with a “warm aesthetic”.

The District Docklands is owned by real estate firm AsheMorgan.

Company spokesman Alton Abrahams said The Market showcased its commitment to “delivering the best Melbourne had to offer at Docklands”.

Existing stores at The District include H & M, Platypus Shoes, Cotton On, Bonds and Politix.

In September, Hoyts is due to open eight-cinema complex with XtremeScreen and Dolby Atmos technology when the entertainment precinct is launched.

It will also include a brewery, hawker-style restaurant and Archie Brothers Electric Circus.
