Wesley, Caulfield among best sporting schools from APS, AGSV school competitions

There were some unstoppable schools on the sporting field this year with premierships coming in thick and fast. See the top rated Victorian sport schools of 2022.

It has been a tremendous year of school sporting action in Victoria with minimal interruptions and plenty of on-field action.

A few schools have been the clear standouts in 2022 including Wesley College and Caulfield Grammar who both took home nine titles for the season, the most of any APS school.

With the year coming to a close, here’s a good time to take a look at the dominant sporting schools of 2022.

WESLEY COLLEGE

It was a successful year on the sporting field for Wesley College, picking up a total of nine premierships, the most of any school in the APS. They were the stars of cross country winning titles in both the boys and girls competitions. Tennis was also a shining light for the school where they won the premiership in the girls competition and finished equal premiers with Caulfield in the boys campaign. They won the girls soccer title in an undefeated season with one draw. The school also won premierships in girls rowing, athletics and volleyball. They finished second in boys water polo, boys diving and girls swimming.

Premierships: Cross country (boys and girls), soccer (girls), tennis (boys and girls), rowing (girls), athletics (boys and girls), volleyball (girls).

CAULFIELD GRAMMAR

A total of eight premierships for Caulfield this year, the second most out of all schools in the state. The school were the stars of football winning the APS girls premiership and sharing the boys title with Brighton. They were undefeated in the girls competition continuing a remarkable win streak of more than 40 games which they also maintained throughout the Herald Sun Shield which they also won. The school also performed strongly in cross country coming second in the boys and girls competitions. Swimming was another highlight with the girls winning the title and the boys coming third. They came equal first with Wesley to win the boys tennis premiership. They also tied with Ivanhoe Grammar to win the girls basketball title. They went undefeated to win the girls water polo competition.

Premierships: Herald Sun Shield (senior girls), football (boys and girls), tennis (boys), basketball (girls), water polo (girls), swimming (girls), diving (girls), volleyball (girls).

CAMBERWELL GRAMMAR

Camberwell’s feat of five premierships were the most of all AGSV schools in 2022. The ball striking sports were in their favour. The school won premierships in boys tennis, table tennis, badminton and finished second in hockey. They also won titles in athletics and swimming. Camberwell also came second in boys basketball and cross country.

Premierships: Swimming (boys), tennis (boys), table tennis (boys), athletics (boys), badminton (boys).

MENTONE GRAMMAR

The girls at Mentone achieved all four premierships for the school in 2022. They took home titles in girls swimming, touch football, athletics and cross country. In the boys, they came third in swimming, volleyball, athletics and cross country.

CAREY GRAMMAR

Titles in girls netball and hockey as well as boys volleyball were the highlights for Carey in 2022. They went undefeated in netball while they shared the volleyball flag with Scotch College. Carey also came second in the boys soccer and third in the girls football and swimming.

Premierships: Netball (girls), volleyball (boys), hockey (girls).

HAILEYBURY COLLEGE

Haileybury were the stars of badminton in 2022 winning the boys and girls APS premierships. They were also impressive in basketball, winning the boys premiership and coming third in the girls competition. Haileybury finished first in the table tennis competition but no premiership was awarded due to not enough teams entering the competition. They also came third in boys diving, second in girls soccer, second in girls AFL football and second in girls hockey.

Premierships: Badminton (boys and girls), basketball (boys).

XAVIER COLLEGE

Xavier had a successful campaign winning premierships in boys soccer, water polo and futsal. They clearly are a specialty for the world game, winning titles in the round ball game in its indoor and outdoor formats. They also won the boys water polo title going undefeated all season. Notably, they came second in the football competition and third in the boys cross country.

Premierships: Soccer (boys), water polo (boys), futsal (boys).

MARCELLIN COLLEGE

Basketball and cross country were the biggest highlights of Marcellin’s sporting year. In both sports, they picked up the premiership trophies. They also had success in football and soccer where they finished second.

Premierships: Basketball (boys), cross country (boys).

MELBOURNE GRAMMAR

The biggest highlights of Grammar’s year of sport would have been winning the boys cricket and hockey titles in two undefeated campaigns. The all-boys school also performed well in basketball, athletics and rowing, coming second in those sports.

Premierships: Cricket (boys), hockey (boys).

SCOTCH COLLEGE

Scotch won premierships in rowing and volleyball in 2022. They shared the volleyball title with Carey Grammar. The all-boys school also came second in swimming and finished third in hockey, water polo and athletics.

Premierships: Rowing (boys), volleyball (boys).

ST KEVIN’S COLLEGE

The water was owned by St Kevin’s in 2022 with the boys taking home the titles in the swimming and diving competitions. The all-boys school also came second in hockey and third in soccer, water polo and rowing.

Premierships: Swimming (boys), diving (boys).

TRINITY GRAMMAR

Trinity fired in cricket and hockey where they took home premierships in the boys competitions. They came second in boys swimming and volleyball and third in boys football, soccer and badminton.

Premierships: Cricket (boys), Hockey (boys).

WHITEFRIARS COLLEGE

The elusive Herald Sun Shield boys title went the way of Whitefriars College in 2022. The school took the honour with a seven-point win over St Patrick’s College, summing up a brilliant campaign for the prestigious school football competition. It also continued a trend of ACC winning the Shield title which they have achieved since 2017.

ASSUMPTION COLLEGE

The boys football premiership was Assumption’s biggest achievement of 2022. The school also had success in basketball where they came third in the boys and girls competitions. They also came third in the boys cricket campaign.

Premierships: Football (boys).

BRIGHTON GRAMMAR

Brighton Grammar took home the football title alongside Caulfield in an epic finish to the season which saw the team’s face off in the final round of the year. The points were split as the full time siren sounded with the scores level, Caulfield 15.6 (96) to Brighton’s 14.12 (96).

Premiership: Football (boys).

IVANHOE GRAMMAR

Despite winning just one premiership in the boys volleyball, Ivanhoe had a successful sporting year finishing in second or third in nine sports. They came second in girls swimming, softball, volleyball and basketball and second in boys and girls athletics. The school came third in boys table tennis and tennis and girls netball.

Premierships: Volleyball (boys).

PENLEIGH & ESSENDON GRAMMAR

PEGS had a successful sporting year where they finished in the top three in a number of sports on top of their boys soccer premiership victory. They came second in the boys cricket, tennis, table tennis and equal second with Caulfield in girls badminton. The school came third in boys hockey and girls athletics and hockey.

Premierships: Soccer (boys).

YARRA VALLEY GRAMMAR

Yarra Valley took home the girls softball title in what was its biggest sporting highlight in 2022. They also had success in boys badminton where they came second on top of girls swimming and cross country where they came third.

Premiership: Softball (girls).

ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE

While the St Pat’s fell short to Whitefriars in the senior division, the intermediate boys won their decider against Parade College in thrilling fashion. The Ballarat school displayed outstanding resilience to keep themselves in the game and eventually come out on top in a nail biting finish.

OUR LADY OF MERCY COLLEGE

The secondary school in Melbourne’s north eastern suburbs won the senior girls division two Herald Sun Shield title over Sacred Heart College Geelong. Finals scores ended 6.7 (43) to 4.3 (27) with Our Lady of Mercy College winning by 16 points.

Premierships: Herald Sun Shield (Division two girls).

PADUA COLLEGE

Padua College took home the Herald Sun Shield division two boys title after defeating MacKillop College by 54 points with the score ending 5.3 (33) 12.9 (81).

Premierships: Herald Sun Shield (Division two boys).

MARIBYRNONG COLLEGE

The Maribyrnong Sports Academy rose to the top of the Australian Schools tennis world by winning the boys division of the national competition in Albury, while their girls team finished in eighth.

Premierships: National division (School tennis boys).

GEELONG COLLEGE

Coming second in the girls netball competition was the highlight of the year for Geelong College. They also came second in girls diving which was a positive. The school finished third in rowing and cross country.

Premierships: Nil.

GEELONG GRAMMAR

Coming second in the girls rowing to first placed Wesley was the highlight of Geelong Grammar’s sporting year. They look destined for success in 2023 with the cricket first XI having started undefeated this season.

Premierships: Nil.

PENINSULA GRAMMAR

The cross country girls team at Peninsula were the top performing team for the school in 2022. They came second in the competition to Mentone Grammar.

Premierships: Nil.
