PREVIEW: Best young talents ready for grand final action

After two months of non-stop action, the Herald Sun Shield reaches its thrilling conclusion with three division two deciders back-to-back on Thursday.

The Shield has already played host to several thrilling deciders, and Thursday’s action from Trevor Barker City Oval is also expected to go right down to the wire.

All three deciders will be live streamed exclusively by KommunityTV through the Herald Sun website.

Maribyrnong College and Avila College will kick off proceedings for the day with both teams going head-to-head for the Intermediate Girls Shield title.

The two schools emerged victorious after a wet and wild semi-final lightning carnival held at Casey Fields last month.

Maribyrnong will go into the grand final as early favourites after winning the encounter between the two sides on that day 2.2-14 to 1.1-7.

Maribyrnong College coach Martin Walsh said the team would move the players around in different positions.

“Their ability to work together as a team and adjust to different positions,” Walsh said.

“Unlike most teams, we like to have players that can play in a variety of positions.

“It sort of really suits and hopefully that helps us tomorrow, being longer quarters.”

Walsh said Alexandra McBride-Loane was a key player in her side alongside Sarah Greaves in the midfield.

“Alexandra’s leadership, weather she starts centre half back or forward, she is a real key,” he said.

Walsh also said midfielder Sarah Greaves in the midfield was also a key.

In the Intermediate Boys grand final Rowville Secondary College will face St Ignatius College, Geelong for a chance to hoist the shield.

Rowville were in sublime form in the semi-finals, and are expected to be a tough outfit to beat, following a 16.16-112 to 5.11-41 blowout win over Padua College last month.

But if St Ignatius College can put a lock on 10-goal semi-final hero Cooper Hynes, it will go a long way to improving their chances in the decider.

In the final grand final of an action-packed affair, Sacred Heart College, Geelong will take on Our Lady of Mercy College (Heidelberg) for the senior girls shield.

Both sides had to outlast an impressive field of seven schools in a semi-finals lightning carnival last week with Sacred Heart College emerging undefeated with young forward Michaela Payne scoring a bagful of goals.
