APS cricket: Every school premiership since 2000

As another APS season approaches, Leader Cricket takes a look back how every school has gone this century. Every premiership since 2000 mentioned:

The Associated Public Schools of Victoria cricket season is back with play set to begin this Saturday, November 5.

Melbourne Grammar are the reigning premiers of the competition and will go for their third title in seven seasons.

Caulfield Grammar look set to contend strongly for first place this season after finishing second in 2022. They will also be striving to end their 34-year premiership drought, the second longest in the competition as of 2022.

As the schoolboy cricketers head into the 2023 campaign, Leader takes a look at the cricket history of every APS school since 2000.

BRIGHTON GRAMMAR

Last season: 11th (0-3-7)

Brighton last won a flag in 2005.

They have had a difficult few years recently, finishing in the bottom four in the past four years.

Brighton were the first team to win a flag this century in 2000.

CAREY GRAMMAR

Last season: Equal 4th (6-0-4)

Carey Grammar currently have the longest premiership drought in APS cricket.

They last won a flag 47 years ago in 1975.

They have been edging closer to the elusive title having progressed from a fifth place finish in 2019 to fourth last season.

CAULFIELD GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Last season: 2nd (6-0-3 plus an outright win)

Caulfield currently hold the second longest premiership drought in the APS competition.

They last won a premiers trophy 34 years ago in 1988.

Caulfield almost broke their lengthy drought in 2019 when it finished third.

Victorian rookie contracted cricketer Campbell Kellaway featured in the team that season.

They also got close in 2014 when they couldn’t take the final wicket to win outright and the ultimate premiership as Carey’s final two batters dug out 105 balls to deny an outright victory.

GEELONG GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Last season: Equal 4th (5-1-3 plus a wash out)

Geelong Grammar last won a premiership in 2014 under skipper Dylan Hodge, brother of AFL icon Luke.

It was a famous victory that went down to the wire as Carey’s final two batsman dug out 105 balls to deny Caulfield a famous win that would have handed them the title.

But instead it was Geelong Grammar who won the trophy in an undefeated season.

HAILEYBURY COLLEGE

Last season: 10th (1-1-7 plus a wash out)

Haileybury have been a powerhouse in recent seasons winning flags in 2018 and 2021.

They surprisingly fell to second last position last season, one season after winning the premiership.

Haileybury have also won back-to-back trophies in 2006 and 2007.

MELBOURNE GRAMMAR

Last season: 1st: (9-0-0 plus an outright win)

Melbourne Grammar are the reigning premiers after a dominant season last year where they won the premiership in an undefeated campaign.

It was their first flag six years after they won it in 2016.

The school also won the trophy in 2008 where AFL footballer Alex Keath and former Victorian first-class cricketer Louis Cameron featured in the victory.

SCOTCH COLLEGE

Last season: 3rd (6-1-3)

Scotch College have been the best team in the last decade having won premierships in 2012, 2017 and 2019.

Current state contracted cricketer Will Sutherland led the 2017 team to a flag.

Scotch also won a flag in 2003 which has them with the second most premierships this century with four, equal with Haileybury.

ST KEVIN’S COLLEGE

Last season: Equal 6th (4-1-5)

St Kevin’s have been a successful team this century having won three premierships.

Their last one was in 2015, just two years after they won another flag in 2013.

In 2001, St Kevin’s also won the title.

THE GEELONG COLLEGE

Last season: 8th (4-0-6)

Geelong College last won a flag in 2011.

They got close in 2020 when they finished fourth after winning five games in the season.

WESLEY COLLEGE

Last season: 9th (2-2-6)

Wesley hold the third longest premiership drought in the APS competition.

They last won a premiership 23 years ago in 1999.

Wesley got close in 2021 after coming third in the competition.

XAVIER COLLEGE

Last season: Equal 6th (4-1-5)

Xavier have been the most successful team this century having won the most premierships of any school in the APS cricket competition.

They have won a total of five premierships with their most recent coming in 2020.

Before that they won back-to-back trophies in 2009 and 2010 and two in four years in 2002 and 2004.
