Streetwatch: A low-blow theft, a massive fire and fatal car crashes

A bushfire relief tin was allegedly stolen from a fast-food outlet, while firefighters had their hands full with a massive Hampton blaze and there was more tragedy on our roads.

A man and a woman, who allegedly stole a charity tin containing money for bushfire victims, have been charged. from a fast- food restaurant in Melbourne’s southeast.

A 41-year-old woman and 37-year-old man were arrested in Dandenong on January 9

The pair – both from Drouin – have been charged with theft and released on bail.

They are due to appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on July 3.

Police allege on January 6 the couple positioned themselves near the charity tin on the front counter of McDonalds on Nepean Highway, Frankston

The man then allegedly removed the tin and placed it in the woman’s handbag before they left the store.

HAMPTON

More than 40 firefighters battled a grocery-shop fire in Hampton on January 15.

Crews arrived on scene about 10.45pm and it was declared under control in one hour and 17 minutes.

At this stage it is not known what caused the fire.

At the height of the fire there were eight firefighting appliances on scene, in addition to a rescue unit, two aerial units and two support and control units.

PAKENHAM/CRANBOURNE

A teenage boy has been robbed at knifepoint on a city-bound train on New Year’s Eve. The 16-year-old was approached by three men between Yarraman and Sandown Park stations.

One had a large knife and they stole the boy’s Nike jacket and cash.

Police said the trio got off at Springvale station and boarded a 902 bus to Chelsea.

PEARCEDALE

A man has died in a car accident in Pearcedale.

Police have been told an SUV was travelling along Baxter-Tooradin Road at 12.20pm on January 14 when it attempted to overtake two cars and collided head-on with a semi-trailer.

Emergency services arrived on scene but were not able to revive the male driver of the SUV.

The driver of the truck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

NARRE WARREN

A Narre Warren man has been interviewed by police for lighting a fire in a campsite to cook a meal during a period of total fire ban in Paradise Beach.

The man lit the fire on January 4.

“Police wish to remind the public that no fires can be lit on a total fire ban day without a Section 40 permit from the CFA,” Leading Senior Constable Rohan Imms said.

Under the CFA Act 1958, it is an offence to light a fire during a total fire ban day without a permit.

Penalties for lighting a fire on a total fire ban include maximum 2 years jail or a large fine.

MORNINGTON

A man’s body was recovered by snorkellers following a suspected drowning in the water at Mills Beach.

The body was recovered on January 11 shortly after 11.30am, and the 36-year-old Cheltenham man was unable to be revived.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner and are not treating the death as suspicious.

RYE

A crash in Rye has left two people dead.

Police believe the vehicles collided at the intersection of Hygeia and Bimble Streets about 10pm on January 13.

There were five occupants in the first vehicle, one man died at the scene and one man died in hospital

A woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition and two men were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A male driver and only occupant of the second vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are being investigated by Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives.

HALLAM

Two more people have been arrested and charged over a shooting in Hallam in October.

On January 15 a 44-year-old Hadfield man was arrested and charged with aggravated home invasion, aggravated burglary, prohibited person possess a firearm and a string of other offences.

He faced Melbourne Magistrates Court and was remanded.

On January 16, a 26-year-old St Albans woman was arrested and charged with aggravated home invasion, aggravated burglary, intentionally cause serious injury and a number of other offences and was also remanded in custody.

The duo, along with another three people who have been charged, will appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on March 30.

The arrests follow an incident on October 6 where a 54-year-old man was shot at a property on Nettle Drive, Dandenong, but survived.

CLYDE NORTH/NARRE WARREN

Two people were arrested in relation to firearms offences after police searched properties in Clyde North, Nar Nar Goon, Narre Warren and Tetoora Road on January 16.

Detectives from the Echo Taskforce arrested a 29-year-old Clyde North man and a 32-year-old Tetoora Road man.

The 29-year-old’s charges related to the use and possession of a fire as a prohibited person.

Police also seized seven guns and ammunition from the Tetoora Road address and a 32-year-old man was charged on summons with firearms offences.

The arrests follow an investigation into a number of alleged firearms offences linked to the Finks Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang.

This included footage of one of the men charged allegedly discharging an assault rifle.

PORT MELBOURNE

Police are investigating the death of a man in Port Melbourne on January 17.

Emergency services were called to a property on Dow S in the inner city at about 6.10am where the 59-year-old had died.

A police spokesman confirmed the man’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

ST KILDA

Mark Younan is wanted by police in relation to family violence, aggravated burglary and assault with a weapon charges.

The 30-year-old is 163cm tall with a thin build, green eyes and brown hair.

He is possibly in possession of a firearm. One warrant has been issued for his arrest.

He is known to frequent the Campbellfield, Craigieburn and St Kilda areas.

CARRUM DOWNS

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Brant Money, 32, on drug charges.

He is known to frequent Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale, Paynesville and Carrum Downs.

He is 172cm tall, thin and with grey hair.
