Man, 19, charged with raft of offences after dog fatally stabbed during attempted burglary

A man has been charged with a string of offences following a bungled home invasion in Berwick on the weekend, when a dog was allegedly stabbed to death.

A man will front court charged after allegedly killing a dog during an attempted bungled home invasion on Saturday afternoon.

Police said a man allegedly killed the dog and tried to steal a car from an addreess in Collins Crescent, Berwick,before he was confronted by a man and woman.

Police received reports of a stabbing at a Collins Cres address and confirmed a struggle took place between a 19-year-old Berwick man and two residents, a man and woman both aged in their 50s.

A neighbour who rushed to help was also involved in the altercation, with the trio overpowering the teen and holding him until police arrived.

Victoria Police Leading Senior Constable Adam West said the man is his 50s suffered a non-life-threatening face laceration and the woman suffered minor injuries.

The neighbour suffered hand injuries and the offender also suffered minor injuries.

All four were taken to hospital.

Neighbour Luke O’Brien said he did not believe it was a targeted attack.

“They’re awesome neighbours, this is really surprising and confronting,” he said.

“Nothing has happened like this in the past in our area, there’s been no dramas.

“We’ve got a dog ourselves, so it’s not something we want to hear.”

Neighbour Mac Mendis said his Toyota Camry, which was the same model as the attempted stolen car, was stolen last month.

“I let my neighbours know because their car is old and the same make,” Mr Mendis said.

A 19-year-old man has been charged with a string of offences including burglary, serious assault, intentionally causing serious injury and aggravated cruelty to an animal.

He was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court today, January 13.
