A kangaroo is recovering after being shot in a disturbing arrow attack in Melbourne’s southeast.

The animal, nicknamed Frank, was discovered by rangers with an arrow through his left leg near the Lysterfield Lake yacht club on Saturday.

Wildlife rescuer Sue Johnston, who was part of the crew called in, said Frank had sustained a gash to the left side of his neck.

“He was in a lot of pain when we got there,” she said.

“When we sedated him and even at the vet, he was still writhing in pain.”

The animal was sedated, rushed to the vet and the arrow was removed.

“Having that happen right on our doorstep is very worrying,” she said.

Ms Johnston said Frank was recuperating at Five Freedoms Animal Rescue in the Macedon Ranges.

Five Freedoms operator and wildlife rescuer Manfred Zabinskas said the roo was doing “pretty well” given the circumstances.

“It’s early days, but he’s doing okay,” he said.

“Fortunately, because he’s from such a public place he’s not scared of people.”

Mr Zabinskas said arrow attacks on native wildlife were becoming more common.

“We’re disgusted and frustrated that this keeps happening,” Mr Zabinskas said.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO SEW POUCHES FOR JOEYS

“We need better restrictions on archery equipment or some kind of record of owners, because we see these used against animals all the time.”

The attack comes six months after two kangaroos were shot with arrows near Greenvale.

Ms Johnston reported the incident to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Endeavour Hills police station.

“If anyone has any information, please contact the police or DELWP,” Ms Johnston said.

Lysterfield Park is known as a great place to see kangaroos and wallabies in the wild close to Melbourne. They are most active during the mornings and evenings.
