Message for Paramedic Safety Scrawled on Melbourne Ambulance

THE MAN who slashed a paramedic with a knife in front of her two children went on an eight-hour crime spree following the attack, including smashing a stolen car into a tree, police said.

He allegedly grabbed the woman, who was off-duty but in uniform, from behind about 6.30pm on Friday night in Rosebud as she buckled her young children into their car seats.

He then stabbed her twice in the chest with a box cutter, Mornington Peninsula detective Senior Constable Alex Montgomery said.

He said the man took off on a mountain bike and an hour later used a tomahawk to smash five windows of the one car in Eighth Ave, Rosebud.

The thug rode off on the bike again before he smashed the front glass door of a takeaway shop on Pt Nepean Rd with the tomahawk and demanded food about 8.40pm.

About an hour later he allegedly stole a Holden sedan from the rear car park of the Rosebud Hotel.

But only eight minutes after taking the car he crashed it at high speed into a tree on Pt Nepean Rd, opposite the Rosebud Hospital.

Sen-Constable Montgomery said passers-by attempted to help him by prizing the driver’s door open, but the man jumped out brandishing a claw hammer and tomahawk at the good Samaritans before running off along the Rosebud foreshore.

Police finally arrested him at 2.45am after he was seen loitering around the Rosebud police station armed with a knife.

The Rosebud man, 47, is currently under police guard in hospital and is yet to be interviewed.

He is expected to be charged with a range of offences, including causing serious injury, assault, theft, criminal damage, theft of a motor vehicle and weapons offences.

The female paramedic said she felt scared, shocked and disappointed and believed she might have treated the man in the past.

Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said she suffered a 15cm gash to her chest in the “horrendous attack”.

“I feel deeply shocked and very concerned that this incident happened in front of two very small children and in a very public location,” he said.

“Attacks against any uniformed staff, be they paramedics, police or any other emergency service worker are absolutely unacceptable.”

He said emergency workers go to work every day to help keep people safe and shouldn’t have to deal with violence as part of their jobs.

The paramedic spent a night at Frankston Hospital and is now recovering at home.

It’s the latest in a string of assaults across the state on our emergency workers.

The State Government has introduced mandatory jail sentences for anyone convicted of assaulting emergency service workers.
