The assault occurred after police and paramedics were called to help a drug-crazed man on Brighton St, Frankston South on June 8.

Frankston Senior Sergeant Phil Hulley said on the way to Frankston Hospital the man lashed out at the paramedics, punching the woman in the chest with both fists.

They evacuated the van on Williams St, behind the hospital, and a police officer was kicked in the groin as they attempted to restrain the man.

The 37-year-old Frankston man then had to be sedated, Sen-Sgt Hulley said.

Ambulance Victoria said the female paramedic suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Sen-Sgt Hulley said the man would be interviewed at a later date.

It comes after the Andrews Government last month announced anyone convicted of assaulting paramedics, police, firefighters or emergency service workers under toughened laws would be jailed.

Premier Daniel Andrews said judges would be stripped of applying “special circumstance’’ discretions in these cases, which includes those who have a mental illness.

Meanwhile homes across Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula have been red-flagged as ambo assault risks, where paramedics face assault, verbal abuse, or attack by dangerous dogs.

Last month Leader reported paramedics are banned from attending a notorious Capel Sound residence without a police escort.

Safety concerns have also been raised at three other Capel Sound houses, three properties in Hastings, two houses each in Frankston, Mornington and Rye, and one house each in Bittern, Sandhurst and Seaford.

The dangers include patients with behavioural issues or a history of violence against paramedics, and houses known to have dangerous dogs or weapons.

Ambulance Employee Union secretary Steve McGhie said officers regularly dealt with difficult situations on the job, from threats and aggression, to weapons being produced and violent assaults.
