AN ARMED drug-fuelled crook has broken a Frankston cop’s leg during a violent arrest over the weekend, police allege.

The painful injury occurred during a scuffle as the male officer attempted to arrest a vandal allegedly smashing windows with a hammer.

Acting Senior Sergeant Al Hanson said police were called to a Frankston house about 12.50pm on Saturday after reports of a man breaking windows.

He said when police arrived the man became aggressive, punching a male officer in the face before wrestling with another and breaking his leg.

The 25-year-old Senior Constable was taken to hospital and had surgery over the weekend.

He was due to be discharged yesterday afternoon.

Sen-Sgt Hanson said the injured officer was in “fairly good spirits” but would be off work for some time.

He said the drug affected crook, a 25-year-old Footscray man, was eventually arrested by the two officers he assaulted.

He has been charged with two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, resisting arrest, criminal damage and other assault offences and was remanded to face court.

Early yesterday morning another male Senior Constable was also assaulted when a 38-year-old Thornbury man wearing a motorcycle helmet allegedly headbutted him during an arrest in Brunswick West.

He was charged with theft of motor vehicle, handle stolen goods, assaulting police and resisting arrest.

And last month a policeman suffered cuts and bruises when he was attacked by a driver with a stick in Hallam.

Public scrutiny on those who assault emergency services workers intensified in May when two women who viciously bashed a paramedic at Reservoir in 2016 avoided jail time.

Amanda Warren, 31, and Caris Underwood, 20, successfully appealed against jail sentences imposed by a magistrate.

Premier Daniel Andrews has since announced anyone convicted of assaulting paramedics, police, firefighters or emergency service workers under toughened laws would be jailed.

He said judges would be stripped of applying “special circumstance’’ discretions in these cases, which includes those who have a mental illness.
