A forklift driver has been tragically killed after he was crushed by a shipping container while working at a Dandenong South business.

Emergency services were called to Fowler Rd just after 6.45am on Monday.

WorkSafe said it was understood a component of the forklift failed as the shipping container was being lifted at Conroy Removals, causing the container to fall back onto the driver’s cabin.

The company was established in 1999 and has branches in Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, Townsville and New Zealand.

Darren Lamb, a 44-year-old man from Koo Wee Rup, died at the scene.

Company director Philip Gordon said he was a valued employee.

“As we are a family company that has a close-knit team this has had a devastating impact on all our people,” Mr Gordon said.

“Our priority at this time is to provide support to the family of our lost team member and all our Melbourne team.”

Mr Gordon said the company is fully co-operating with WorkSafe and the police in their investigations.

This is the second workplace fatality in 2022 after a truck driver was killed when his vehicle crashed and burst into flames in Karramomus in the state’s north on January 13.
