A luxury hotel is being built opposite nightclubs, a tattoo parlour and a Club X store in Ringwood.
Construction has begun at 98 Maroondah Highway for the seven-storey Ringwood Sebel hotel, with drillers and excavators on site.
The Sebel is one of parent company Accor Hotels’ premium brands and has seven other locations throughout Victoria.
It offers “spacious and elegantly decorated apartments” and a reputation for “stylish design and outstanding service”.
The new hotel will boast 77 serviced apartments along with a gym, meeting rooms and a restaurant.
Plans for the site — which has been empty and covered with graffiti and fencing — got the green light in late 2014.
Maroondah Council approved the latest amendments in April, which included a reduction in floor space and “an amalgamation of serviced apartments”.

Mayor Rob Steane said a hotel was an ideal choice for the site due to its proximity to public transport and services within the Ringwood activity centre.
“This building will contribute positively to the streetscape of Maroondah Highway through its quality design and appearance; will generate economic development through employment opportunities; as well as offering temporary accommodation options for visitors travelling into Maroondah for business or leisure,” he said.
Cr Steane said it was unclear when construction would be finished.
The Sebel is part of growing list of big name hotel brands coming to Maroondah Highway and Ringwood, joining Eastland’s Sage Hotel which opened in 2017.
A 160-room Holiday Inn hotel will be part of the 16-storey Ringwood Residences tower near Ringwood Lake, with construction to begin shortly.
A hotel is also being considered by Maroondah Council as part of amendments to the 19-storey, three-tower ‘The Ring’ development at 28-30 Maroondah Highway.
