THE ANDREWS Government has thrown a $170 million election sweetener at Melbourne’s outer east, promising a $170 million upgrade of Upper Ferntree Gully’s Angliss Hospital if re-elected.
The pledge would see at least 25 new hospital beds added to the Angliss, and a a new 120-bed aged care facility at the nearby Wantirna Health site.
Work on the hospital would start in 2022 and would be finished by 2025, while work on the aged care centre would start in 2020.

The cash splash comes after the hospital opened a $20 million intensive care unit, a second short-stay unit, a refurbished paediatric area and new mental health spaces in the emergency department.
Labor claimed the projects would create about 500 jobs.
“Only Labor will make sure local families have high quality, affordable public healthcare close to home, whatever stage of life they’re in,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.
Health Minister Jill Hennessy said doctors and nurses would benefit from new equipment and upgrades.
“We’re standing with them and giving them a world-class hospital to deliver first-class care.”
Ferntree Gully state Liberal MP Nick Wakeling said the Coalition was “considering” whether to match the proposal.
“Daniel Andrews’ track record on hospitals has been projects running late and over budget. Residents can rightly be sceptical about how long it will be before they see a benefit,” Mr Wakeling said.
“We’ll be seeking further information to enable us to consider the proposal.”
Eastern Health executive director Zoltan Kokai said the announcement would make Angliss a healthcare hub in Knox.
“Building healthcare infrastructure so we are better placed to deliver our programs is of great importance,” Mr Kokai said.
“We support any funding which will enhance the programs we offer, and will mean better care for our community.”
