TWO major Croydon intersections will get a $6.6 million safety boost if the Coalition wins next month’s state election.

Maroondah Leader can reveal Croydon state Liberal MP and Opposition roads spokesman David Hodgett will today pledge a number of upgrades for parts of Maroondah Hwy, Kent Ave, Yarra Rd and Plymouth Rd.

His announcement will include $4.4 million for improvements to the complex Maroondah Hwy, Yarra Rd and Kent Ave intersection. It will include pedestrian crossing and slip lane improvements and better footpath links.

Mr Hodgett will also pledge $2 million for the installation of turning lanes and other safety measures at the intersection of Plymouth Rd, Golden Ridge Dve and Sand Gate Ave, close to two schools.

He said the roads carried an “enormous” amount of traffic and residents were fed up with rising congestion in the area.
“You talk to local people around Croydon and everyone has a story about being stuck in traffic,” Mr Hodgett said.

“It (the upgrades) will help us get back in control of congestion and help traffic flow more safely, and people will be able to spend more time with the families and get where they need to be.”

Croydon Hills’s Mel Povey said she used the Maroondah Hwy intersection daily and it was “congested and choking in the mornings”.

“I have friends whose children cross there and I fear there could be a potential fatality on that slip road,” she said.

“It’s something that will be welcomed by the local community and especially those using those intersections during peak school times.”

Maroondah Council has long pushed for funding for the two road projects.

In a statement, Mayor Nora Lamont welcomed both pledges and the pedestrian and vehicle safety improvements they would bring.

“Council has a keen interest in ensuring suitable and safe pedestrian infrastructure is provided, which is why we have been actively lobbying for funding,” she said.

Roads Minister Luke Donnellan did not say if the Government would match the Coalition’s pledges.
