A real estate director believes Bayswater North will soon be home to the new ‘Golden Mile’ for shoppers.

Vacant land is gradually being snapped up along Canterbury Rd as developers eye opportunities to bring big brands to the area.

The strip, between Dorset and Bayswater roads, already has some major brands including Bunnings, BCF (Boating Camping Fishing), The Good Guys and Spotlight.

Two other retailers will join them in the near future at 183-185 Canterbury Rd, next to Officeworks and a childcare centre.

The 8586sq m site, privately owned by a family from Melbourne’s inner east, will be developed to feature two large showrooms.

JLL Glen Waverley director Simon Wellock said the site was put up for sale last year with a $4 million price tag but no offers had suited desired plans.

He said the strip was primed for more retail and industrial development on the corner of Dorset Rd.
“The area is calling out for it,” Mr Wellock said.

“The guys from Nunawading and along Whitehorse Rd, they are looking to relocate down that sort of area.
“It’s a struggle to get anything around Ringwood and they are being forced out in a way, and they can see Bayswater North getting that growth.”

Mr Wellock said the site owners were talking to builders and were likely to lodge their plans in the next two months.

Maroondah Business Group spokeswoman Edwina Ricci said the area had plenty of potential and could be ideal for a major brand outlet centre.

Ms Ricci she there should be a feasibility study done to make sure there was an appropriate development which complimented nearby businesses.

Maroondah Mayor Rob Steane said the land was classed as industrial zone one and the council had issued planning permits for industrial, retail and trade supply use.

Cr Steane said the council would continue to consider any new applications for the area.
