A TRAUMATISED Ringwood North woman robbed at a Commonwealth Bank ATM is unconvinced its security camera is working.

Jo Hill, 60, had $200 and her purse stolen after she was attacked by a bystander at the ATM at 170-172 Warrandyte Rd on August 11 at 6.30pm.

She suffered a heart attack from the stress of the incident and spent a week recovering in Box Hill Hospital.
Ms Hill said she called a police officer while she was in hospital, who told her the ATM’s security camera was switched off and they could not obtain the footage.

A bank representative then wrote a letter to Ms Hill, seen by Maroondah Leader, stating they “do not have security cameras at every site where an ATM is located”.

The representative suggested Ms Hill make an official complaint so the bank could review “whether there is a need/case for installation of cameras at North Ringwood and other locations”.

CBA closed its Ringwood North branch in May and Ms Hill said she didn’t want to use the ATM “ever again” following the incident.
“My whole body literally shook for three days,” she said.
“I’ve been traumatised by this, I find it hard to sleep at night because I just keep going over and over it.”

Ms Hill said she wasn’t fussed about losing her money but was concerned the bank was “leaving customers at risk”. She said she also wanted to see the footage if it is available.

A Commonwealth Bank spokeswoman, who declined to be named, said a security camera was operating at the Ringwood North ATM and had not been switched off at any time.

The spokeswoman said information in the letter sent to Ms Hill was incorrect and the bank had handed over CCTV footage to Ringwood Police.

But Ringwood Senior Sergeant Colin Andrews said officers contacted CBA on August 13 and were told there was no footage of the incident — and they were yet to receive it.

Sen Sgt Andrews said officers were trying to source footage from other nearby businesses as part of their investigations.
He urged any witnesses to contact Ringwood Police on 9871 3000.
