Blackburn South child baited with lollies in feared kidnap attempt

A BLACKBURN South mother has told of the dreadful moment she realised her five year old autistic son was almost kidnapped in their front yard after being baited with a bag of lollies from strangers in a passing car.

Living with Autisim (60 Minutes)

A FIVE-year-old autistic boy was given a bag of lollies from strangers in a passing car during what his mother believes was an attempted kidnapping at their Blackburn South home.

Kassandra Harving said a car pulled up outside her house on Sunday, August 26, and after she’d looked away for two moments, her son was holding a bag of lollies she’d never seen before.

The car sped off before she could run from the window to the gate to investigate.

“And I’ve just realised, shit, they’ve just tried to kidnap my son,” the tearful mum said.

Ms Harving said she noticed the white sedan pull up outside her property half angling onto her driveway, while her son Nikki was playing in the front garden, but assumed the driver must have been dropping someone off next-door.

But when the car fled and Nikki was left with an opened bag of lollies, she realised whoever was in the car was trying to kidnap him, and had been scared off by the padlock she keeps on her gate to stop Nikki from opening it.

The Harvings live on a main road, and she doesn’t believe anyone else would have had time to pass the house and hand the lollies to her son in the time she looked away.

Nikki, who is non-verbal, was unable to tell her or police who gave him the lollies.

Ms Harving reported the incident to Forest Hill police station.

Police were unable to comment on the incident to Whitehorse Leader because the case contained sensitive information.

Ms Harving said an officer told her the report had been passed onto a sexual offences and child investigation team.

Ms Harving believes the incident happened about 1.41pm on Sunday, August 26 and said the car was a white sedan with a rear wing and darkened windows.

She said she had been left so scared she felt it was no longer safe for her son to play outside.

“I slept with Nikki in my bed that night, with me.”
