Operation Roadwise catches 454 drivers in Wyndham breaking the law

Police have busted hundreds of speeding, drunk and distracted drivers on roads in Melbourne’s west these holidays, including one man who had a ridiculous excuse for doing more than 30km over the speed limit. SEE HOW YOUR AREA FARED

Drivers in Wyndham have taken out the unwanted title of the worst behaved in Melbourne’s western suburbs during the holiday period.

In just 24 days, 454 motorists were caught flouting the law in the municipality, with 103 detected speeding and another 82 busted driving unregistered vehicles.

Fifty were spotted disobeying traffic signs and signals, another 50 were caught without a fastened seatbelt and 51 were using their mobile phone behind the wheel.

Operation Roadside catches 1900 drivers breaking law in Moreland

During a 90-minute period on New Year’s Day officers detected three drivers travelling more than 30km/h over the speed limit in Werribee.

One man, who was rushing to pick up his mum from church, was caught doing 90km/h in a 60km/h zone on Bulban Rd, with the two other drivers intercepted at 141km/h and 132km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Princes Freeway while overtaking.

Across the entire western suburbs, police issued 911 fines and infringements during Operation Roadwise, which ran from December 13 to January 5.

Motorists in Melton were the second-worst behaved with 215 tickets issued, while Maribyrnong saw the least with only 37 offences detected.

Across Victoria, more than 22,000 traffic and 2,910 criminal offences were detected by police, with more than 8700 caught speeding, 628 drink-driving and 621 drug-driving.

Seventeen people also lost their lives on Victoria’s roads during the holiday period.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said it was alarming how many unauthorised drivers police were detecting.

“Every one of those drivers detected by police should not have been on the road for one reason or another,” she said.

“We are already off to a sad start this year and I do not want to see any more Victorians dying unnecessarily.”

Operation Roadwise statistics reflect enforcement from lunchtime on December 19 to midnight on January 5 due to police industrial action at the start of the operation.
