Existing landline and internet services will be disconnected across several suburbs this month to make way for the National Broadband Network (NBN).

If your home is affected you should have been notified about 18 months ago, but NBN Co says some residents are yet to make the switch.

Moving to the network isn’t automatic and you need to contact your internet provider about a plan that will meet your speed and data needs.

And with scammers targeting seniors during the switch, NBN Co has warned people about swindlers pretending to be them.

Head of NBN Local Victoria, Matt Evans, said NBN Co did not take money directly from consumers.

“We never make unsolicited calls, request remote access to a resident’s computer or door knock to sell broadband services to the public,” he said.

“If someone claiming to work for NBN Co has contacted you trying to sell you an internet or phone service ask for their details, hang up and call your retail service provider to check if they’re legitimate. If you’ve already provided your details, contact your financial institution immediately.”

As the disconnections begin, Mr Evans reminded home and business-owners services such as EFTPOS terminals and fire alarms could be affected.

“It’s particularly important for anyone with a medical alarm, auto-dialler or emergency call button to register these devices on NBN Co’s Medical Alarm,” he said.
