Police are urging households to take simple steps to safeguard their homes against opportunistic thieves this festive season.

Superintendent Craig Peel said crooks targeted homes during the holiday period which appeared empty.

“While people are starting to unwind and head away for the Christmas and New Year period, it’s important they don’t let their guard down when it comes to home security,” he said.

“Police are reminding the community that exercising common sense can mean the difference between falling victim to heartless thieves and keeping safe.

“If you plan to be away for an extended period of time, arrange a house sitter, install an alarm system or set lights on a timer so the house looks occupied.

“It’s also worth asking a family member, friend or neighbour to collect your mail and newspapers and take the bins in.”

Superintendent Peel said while making sure your home appeared attended was a priority, there were plenty of other measures to take, including locking all doors and windows – even if you’re home.

Police also advised homeowners to install CCTV, not only to deter criminals but to aide any subsequent investigation.

Leaving a car in the driveway, telling neighbours you’re leaving and even cutting branches to limit burglar hiding spots were hot tips from police.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE:

• Lock all windows and doors, even if you’re at home, as unlocked side and rear doors are the most common entry points for burglars

• Install deadlocks on external doors and windows.

• Install CCTV cameras, which may not only deter burglars but assist with investigations

• Leave clothes hanging on the line

• Leave a car parked and locked in the driveway and ensure any gates are closed

• Let your neighbours know you’ll be away for a few days so they can keep an eye on your house

• If you’re waiting on a parcel to be delivered, have someone pick it up or make alternative arrangements

• Cut overhanging branches away from your house to make it hard for burglars to hide
