The background of a man accused of murdering a seasonal worker in northwest Victoria have been detailed in court.

Man charged with murder over Manangatang death

A man accused of murdering a seasonal worker in northwest Victoria has an opiod addiction and is medicated for schizophrenia, a court has heard.

Dael Daniel Newman, 41, faced Albury Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday charged with murder, aggravated burglary and intentionally cause injury.

He made no application for bail and was remanded to appear in Mildura Magistrate’s Court for committal mention on August 31.

Newman, a short and slim man with a shaved head, was wearing prison greens.

He is accused of killing Dave Gaskell, a seasonal worker, near Wemen in northwest Victoria.

Last week those closest to Gaskell said he survived cancer and was a “true fighter”.

A family friend of 18 years, Mitch, said he was “gutted” by the loss.

He had known Dave since he was 10.

Mitch said Dave would never be forgotten by his family.

Close friend Darrel Johnson said Mr Gaskell ran a competition at the local pub once a week and “just stuck to himself”.

Paramedics worked on Mr Gaskell but he died at the scene.
