The younger brother of a notorious killer driver who killed six teenagers has been denied bail despite begging a magistrate to be released because he has Covid.

Darren George Towle, 46, was denied bail for the third time in Mildura Magistrate’s Court after he allegedly veered off the road and crashed into a 72-year-old in November last year.

The victim, a delivery driver, had to have his leg amputated because his injuries were so severe.

But on Wednesday Towle begged magistrate Michael Coughlan to be released after he was diagnosed with Covid on Saturday.

“I’m not well. I’m not well, please your honour,” Towle said.

It is alleged Towle was under the influence of alcohol and methamphetamines at the time of the incident.

But his lawyer Stephanie Gilaham disputes the role these substances played in the incident.

“He was very marginally over the legal limit,” she told the court.

Ms Gillaham argued Towle should be released on bail after the diagnosis and his serious lung infection.

Mr Coghlan adjourned the matter until Tuesday April 5.

Towle told the court he wanted to “get out” and “seek psychiatric help”.

“I’m gut wrenched, I thought I had a good chance,” he said to his mother who also appeared on the court link.

The man Towle allegedly hit was a delivery driver getting newspapers from the back of his parked ute when Towle allegedly smashed into him with his red Holden Commodore sedan, pinning him between the two vehicles.

He is facing charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury and committing an indictable offence on bail.

The Mildura community was left reeling in February 2006 by a horror collision in which six teenagers were killed when Towle’s older brother, Thomas Towle, with his son on his lap, sped through the group of teens as they left a 16th birthday party on the outskirts of Mildura.

Family and friends of the victims were left outraged when he was sentenced to 10 years jail for dangerous driving causing the deaths of Shane Hirst, 16, his sister Abby, 17, Stevie-Lee Weight, 15, Cassandra Manners, 16, Cory Dowling, 16, and Josephine Calvi, 16.

Four others were seriously injured.
