A construction worker turned heroin trafficker was nabbed in a police mail scanning operation sending two parcels worth of the drug across the Nullarbor to Western Australia.
Nicholas ‘Nic’ Proctor, 38, pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday, December 2 to trafficking heroin.
Proctor, who was jailed for a maximum six years for importing heroin from Thailand in the County Court, was also caught in a sting attempting to send heroin from Melbourne to Perth.
On August 9, 2023, police seized two parcels at Tullamarine Airport containing a total of 63.3g of the drug that were linked to Proctor.
When police seized his phone, Signal messages between Proctor and a contact showed him offering to sell heroin.
Proctor, who also pleaded guilty to burglary charges, dishonesty charges and handling stolen goods, was also caught stealing a bike from a Carlton address in January 2023.
Proctor, who had a difficult upbringing with an alcoholic father, appeared in court via video link from Fulham Correctional Centre.
His lawyer Jasmine Pisasale told the court Proctor’s offending was “inextricably linked to grief, trauma and addiction”.
Ms Pisasale conceded Proctor’s heroin deal required some level of sophistication but the other offending “lacked any planning”, the court heard.
“Addiction was real, a heavy one and a challenge for him,” Ms Pisasale said.
The court heard Proctor had prior criminal convictions in Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria.
According to social media, Proctor came to Melbourne after spending much of his life in Perth.
He also worked in various construction roles.
Proctor was sentenced to six months’ jail by Magistrate Nicole Spicer which he will serve concurrently alongside the six-year stint he received for importing heroin from Thailand.
He was also fined $1400 and will be eligible for parole in 2027.
