A DRUGGED-UP driver who drove at police in a stolen car before crossing on to the wrong side of the road and hitting a family’s vehicle has been jailed.

The court heard on October 2 last year police were called by concerned members of the public after they witnessed Ganaban behaving erratically in a Glen Waverley servo.

When police attended and tried to approach Ganaban, he drove off in the stolen car.

He was tracked to a nearby hotel car park, where he smashed the car into the passenger’s side of a police car, forcing officers to jump out of the way.

He drove out the car park, along Ferntree Gully Rd and went over the median strip onto the wrong side of the road, crashing into the other car.

He was taken to hospital and then remanded.

At the time Ganaban was on bail, disqualified from driving and a warrant was out for his arrest.

His defence lawyer said Ganaban had a long history of drug use, had mental health issues around schizophrenia and needed support.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the driving was very serious, dangerous and reckless, and compounded by a very extensive criminal past dating back over 20 years.

“You drove in a way that put police members, a father and his children at risk of harm,” Mr Vandersteen said.

Ganaban was sentenced to two years in jail, with a non-parole period of 14 months.

He has already served 316 days in custody.

He was also fined $750 and had his driving licence disqualified for two years.
