Jared Raccanello allegedly stabbed St Kilda man on Middle Park bus

A man who allegedly stabbed another man on a Middle Park bus on Saturday night before jumping into Albert Park Lake in an attempt to avoid police will remain behind bars.

A man accused of slashing another following an argument on a suburban bus before jumping into the cold water of a lake to evade police will remain behind bars.

Jared Raccanello, 32, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with the stabbing of a St Kilda man on a bus in Middle Park on Saturday night.

It is alleged Mr Raccanello stabbed 27-year-old Calum Aitken after an argument broke out between the duo on the bus on Canterbury Rd at 9pm.

In his initial court appearance on Sunday, the court heard Mr Raccanello fled the bus before jumping into a nearby lake in an attempt to hide from police.

Police then pulled him from the water after he had refused police direction’s to climb out.

Mr Raccanello has been charged by Transit Police with intentionally causing serious injury and intentionally destroying property.

On Monday, the court heard Mr Raccanello — who has a psychiatric illness — would be remanded in custody as he was not making an application for bail.

The Prahran man will next front court on March 19, including on a number of other charges, the court was told.
