A former cop awaiting sentencing on sickening child abuse material charges has allegedly accessed similar material while in custody.

Alan John Hawley, 51, fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after he was charged by the federal police’s Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) on February 21.

It is alleged Mr Hawley accessed child abuse material on his iPhone on February 17 in West Melbourne just two weeks after he was remanded into custody by a judge.

He has also been charged with committing an offence at Greensborough against Section 474.22 of the Criminal Code, where the maximum penalty is 15 years in prison.

Mr Hawley, who appeared via video link from Hopkins Correctional Centre, was a police officer at Sunshine station and served 11 years in the force.

His most recent role was as a crime scene officer.

The court heard that Mr Hawley “has other matters that are being dealt with in the County Court”.

“He’s awaiting sentence on similar charges,” Mr Hawley’s lawyer said.

He was charged on summons but Magistrate Brett Sonnet told the court “it’s not appropriate he’s charged on summons” and remanded him into custody.

Mr Hawley pleaded guilty at the County Court on February 3 to seven child abuse related charges after an investigation uncovering 19,856 files — including 168 hours of footage — across several phones and USBs.

The former police officer was remanded into custody after his plea by Judge Frank Gucciardo.

Mr Hawley will next face court on the new charges on May 23.
