A Melbourne not-for-profit enterprise that employs people who are disadvantaged is facing allegations an unsafe workplace led to the death of a visually and hearing-impaired worker.
Ability Works Pty Ltd faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday after it was charged with two counts of failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace.
In December 2022, a worker with vision and hearing impairments was injured and later died in hospital after they fell down a stairwell during their lunch break.
WorkSafe will allege the company failed to provide a safe system of work to prevent workers with mobility or vision impairment accessing the staircase from the break room at its Kew workplace.
Ability Works is a not-for-profit organisation which employs 150 people who suffer from a disability or are socially disadvantaged.
Chairman James Edmonds appeared in court to represent the company.
The Kew-based employer will next face court on April 15.
