A HOMELESS man sleeping at a Camberwell oval has been bashed senseless with a cricket bat in a vicious night-time attack.
Boroondara detective Senior Sergeant Daryl Cullen said witnesses to the brutal assault at Camberwell Sports Ground reported seeing three men approach the victim, 37, near the oval between 9.30 and 10pm on October 25.

The witnesses also alleged the attackers had been smoking cannabis.
“Then they heard a loud whack and found the homeless man bloodied and disoriented on the ground next to a broken cricket bat,” Sen-Sgt Cullen said.
The victim was rushed to The Alfred hospital with possible concussion, head lacerations and missing teeth.
Sen-Sgt Cullen said the vicious assault concerned emergency services at the scene.
“We’re not yet sure if it was an unprovoked attack or not, but the homeless man was defenceless,” he said.
“This is a warning for people to take care at night, especially if you are alone because unfortunately there are people out there who get pleasure out of beating others.”
It is believed the homeless man had been living at the site for “some time” and was sleeping in the grandstand at the oval.
Police are currently reviewing footage from nearby CCTV cameras in the hopes of identifying the three men.
Anyone with information should report it to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
