AN INTERSECTION in Melbourne’s south continues to be the State Government’s biggest speed camera earner, netting more than $8 million in 35,000 fines last financial year.
Cameras at the Warrigal and Batesford roads intersection nabbed speedsters more than 35,000 times, collecting $8,408,561 in fines during the 2017/18 year, making it the worst location for speeding fines in the state.

The second worst in the state is nearby, with the North and Clayton roads intersection in Oakleigh East, nabbing 12,370 drivers, raising more than $3 million in revenue.
Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Simon Webb said most cameras detected both speed and red light offences.
He said the Warrigal and Batesford roads intersection had a high level of pedestrian traffic and because there were few casualty crashes at the site, it meant the cameras were probably having the desired effect by reducing collisions.
Sgt Webb said police continued to focus on road safety and reducing road trauma by monitoring driver distraction — including mobile phone use — seat belts, red light runners, speed, and drink and drug driving.
Department of Justice and Regulation spokeswoman Ashleigh Brown said road safety cameras played an important role in reducing road trauma and the number of road deaths.
“We understand no one likes getting a fine and we’d prefer it if no one did because it would mean they weren’t risking lives by speeding or running red lights,” Ms Brown said. “They get motorists to slow down and drive at speeds appropriate for the road they’re travelling on.”
Across the state most of the 867,685 speeding fines were for drivers travelling at less than 10km/h above the speed limit, but there were also almost 1000 drivers caught speeding by more than 45km/h.
