The Goulburn Valley has plenty of fantastic butchers providing delicious sausages, steaks, hams, and roasts, but we can finally reveal the region’s best.

The winners of the Goulburn Valley News’ best butcher competition are Tatura Family Butcher and Market Meats.

Working in a butcher shop since he was 12, owner of Tatura Family Butcher Brady Bourke said he always knew he wanted to be a butcher.

He started his apprenticeship when he was 15, and bought his owner butcher’s shop in 2012.

“I’ve been a butcher for 18-19 years,” Mr Bourke said.
“I wanted to be butcher since I was a little kid.”
Mr Bourke said he was honoured to be nominated as the Goulburn Valley’s best butcher.

“It’s absolutely sensational,” he said.

“It gives us a good pat on the back and makes the job feel worth while and that people appreciate us.”

Tatura Family Butcher has been run off their feet in the lead up to Christmas, but Mr Bourke said they were most well known for their sausages.

“We have people who come from Melbourne to buy them,” he said.

Born and raised in Shepparton, owner of Market Meats Josh Sleeth has been a butcher for 25 years.

He said there was over 100 years of experience at his butcher shop, which he’s been running for almost 10 years.

“It was always my dream to open my own butchers shop,” Mr Sleeth said.

“When I first started my apprenticeship I used to walk through butcher’s shops and supermarkets and look at their displays.

“I love putting my window in and making it look good, cutting product, and serving my customers.”

Mr Sleeth said Market Meats’ old school approach to butchery is what kept customers coming back.

“We do everything here, where as there’s not too many who do that anymore,” he said.

“We go to the sale yards and buy all our own lamb and beef and I think we’re the only ones around here who do that.”
