A fatality at one of the state’s most notorious intersections has come as no shock to the Heidelberg community who regularly see motorists driving on the wrong side of busy Bell St.
Police are investigating after a blue Mazda reportedly veered onto the wrong side of the road on Bell St, from Upper Heidelberg Rd, and crashed into a white Toyota on the evening of January 13, killing a woman and injuring four others including a young girl.

Heidelberg Heights’ Sandie Summers said she saw a P-plater drive on the wrong side of the road at the intersection, just two days earlier.
“Luckily the driver was going slow, as it looked like they didn’t know the area well and saw an oncoming car … they stopped just in time,” Ms Summers said.
“If you don’t live in the area, I can see exactly how this can happen.
“It’s terribly signposted.”
Others told the Heidelberg Leader drivers often travelled on the wrong side of the road at the notorious intersection and called for better road signs to direct traffic.
The troublesome intersection, which includes the stretch of Upper Heidelberg Rd, ranked ninth in RACV’s 2018 Redspot Survey for traffic congestion.
RACV data showed three crashes were reported at the intersection in the past five years, including the most recent, which was the first fatal.
According to RACV spokesman Dave Jones, figures from VicRoads data suggested the intersection was not a “high risk location”.
VicRoads undertook an inspection of the intersection last week.
Regional director for Metro North West, Vince Punaro said VicRoads were investigating options to improve safety.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the woman killed in this tragic accident,” Mr Punaro said.
“Investigations are ongoing and we’re working closely with Victoria Police to better understand the circumstances of this crash.”
Victoria Police senior sergeant Ben Davies said he was not aware of other cases where drivers had driven on the wrong side of the road at the intersection.
But Sgt Davies said it was possible they had occurred, just were not reported to police.
The crash marks the ninth road death for 2019.
