A woman has died and a man suffered life-threatening injuries after a head-on smash on Bell St in Melbourne’s northeast on Sunday night.
The pair were travelling in a Mazda sedan that veered into oncoming traffic in Heidelberg Heights about 5.30pm.
The man and woman were cut free from the wreckage of the crash and taken to hospital.
The woman later died from her injuries and the man was in a critical condition on Sunday night, Victoria Police said.
A police statement said it was believed the blue Mazda turned onto Bell St from Upper Heidelberg Road.
“The Mazda has driven onto the wrong side of the road and collided head on with a white Toyota,” the statement said.
“A third vehicle collided with the rear of the white Toyota but the single occupant was not injured.
“The male driver and female passenger of the white Toyota were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”
A young girl, who was a passenger in one of the other vehicles, was also taken to hospital with a suspected broken collarbone.
The dramatic crash temporarily blocked off multiple lanes of Bell St.
Victoria Police said it appeared two cars collided head on and then struck a third vehicle.
The exact cause is yet to be determined at this stage.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade Commander Dave Woods said the man and woman were trapped and had to be freed with specialist rescue equipment.
He said emergency vehicles stayed at the scene until all three cars were moved and the spillage from the crash was cleaned up.
VicRoads had earlier advised drivers to avoid the area if possible.
Witnesses were urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
