Your grocery trip could be about to get more exciting, with the major supermarket giants planning to open new state-of-the-art stores across Melbourne.

Woolworths has a number of new developments in the works, including new stores at Mernda and Rosanna, while Aldi has plans to open new stores in Knox and Pakenham.

Coles recently opened a fancy new Coles Local store in Camberwell, home to a resident “cheese specialist”, ready to offer tips to customers on how to put together the perfect grazing platter.

Head of Coles Local Michael Fahd said customers were increasingly searching for a specialist retailer experience, while being able to shop from a full range of food and groceries.

“Coles Local Camberwell will be a sought-after destination for locals with plant-based diets, with our vegan and vegetarian specialty range exceeding 220 different products,” he said.

Woolworths is also opening two new Woolworths Metro stores before Christmas – Woolworths Metro City North and Woolworths Metro Albert Park.

“Tailored to local customers looking for a convenient walk-up offer, Woolworths Metro stores offer an extensive selection of Aussie fruit and vegetables, innovative dinner solutions, and a range of grocery items including key essentials for those wanting a quick and easy top up shop,” a Woolworths Metro spokesperson.

“We can’t wait to welcome customers into our newest Metro stores and look forward to sharing more information about our future store openings in the coming months.”

Located on the corner of Bridge Inn Rd and Plenty Rd, about 25km from Melbourne’s CBD, stage one of the Mernda Town Centre development will be next to the new Mernda railway station.

It will include a modern market-style Woolworths supermarket, carparking, restaurants and cafes, and various specialty retailers, offices and community features.

Up to 150 new jobs will be created in south east Melbourne after Woolworths won approval to build a $20m supermarket in Dandenong North.

The supermarket, which will be built on the corner of Gladstone Rd and David St, will include a BWS and six specialist stores, the supermarket giant told Leader.

Woolworths expects 180 jobs will be created in construction, while the supermarket will employ more than 150 staff on an ongoing basis.

The site was formerly owned by German supermarket heavy weight Kaufland, before it off-loaded the property to Woolworths in June last year.
