Up to 150 new jobs will be created in Covid-battered part of Melbourne after Woolworths won approval to build a $20m supermarket in Dandenong North.

The supermarket, which will be built on the corner of Gladstone Rd and David St, will include a BWS and six specialist stores, the supermarket giant told Leader.

Woolworths expects 180 jobs will be created in construction, while the supermarket will employ more than 150 staff on an ongoing basis.

The site was formerly owned by German supermarket heavy weight Kaufland, before it off-loaded the property to Woolworths in June last year.

Multiple Greader Dandenong councillors expressed their happiness that the area would now be used, with construction predicted to start next year.

“It’s great to see something being built at this gateway to Dandenong” Cr Jim Memeti said.

Cr Memeti said the block resembled an eye sore in its current state.

Cr Bob Milkovic said Woolworths decision was a “vote of confidence” in Dandenong and the local labour force, while Cr Rhonda Garad lauded the plan’s 4-Star Green Energy rating.

It is understood the supermarket will incorporate solar panels and a freshwater rain tank in its final design.

A report prepared by council staff said the supermarket would be open seven days a week from 7am to midnight with 279 carparking bays, including five spots for electric car charging.

The report also said that 3606sq m shopping centre would have a dedicated home-delivery section to the south of the building.

Woolworths development manager Martin Lohan said more plans would be unveiled in the coming months.

“Woolworths Dandenong North will mark the next evolution in our journey,” Mr Lohan said.

“(Woolworths) will create a modern and contemporary neighbourhood supermarket with exciting initiates like Direct to Boot and Pick Up for the convenience of our customers,” he said.
