Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court: Oscar Waters faces court after crash that claimed life of Jake Munday

The driver of a car that crashed in Cowes, killing a teenager, allegedly returned positive alcohol test and was speeding, court documents show.

The teenager accused of crashing a car and killing another teen in Cowes on grand final weekend was allegedly speeding and had alcohol in his system, court documents have revealed.

Oscar Robert Waters, 18, appeared in the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court on Wednesday where he faced one charge of dangerous driving causing death, after 19-year-old Jake Munday was killed on Saturday.

The court hearing was over quickly after a date was given for a committal hearing to begin.

Mr Waters, of St Kilda East, appeared in the court via video link with his defence, Sally Vardy.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives charged Mr Waters after the fatal crash in Cowes on Saturday, September 30.

Court documents allege Mr Waters sped south of Justice Rd when he approached a roundabout, before clipping the gutter with the rear passenger side wheel and blowing the tyre.

The documents from police then allege Mr Waters lost control of the car and it hit some trees before landing on Justice Rd about 11.30pm.

The court documents also alleged Mr Waters had a positive reading for alcohol at the time of the crash.

Five men were in the car at the time of the crash.

Mr Munday was allegedly sitting in the rear passenger seat, while two other 19-year-olds and another 18-year-old were also in the car.

Mr Waters’ bail was extended to his next court date which was set for early next year.
