Maddison Miller: Tarneit teen killed in motorbike crash near Stawell ‘loved life’

The grandmother of a Tarneit teenager killed in a horror motorbike crash in the state’s west has described her death as a “freak accident”.

The grandmother of a Tarneit teenager killed in a motorcycle accident near Stawell has described her as a lover of life with a cheeky sense of humour.

Maddison Miller, 18, was killed when her motorbike hit a tree on Rutters Track, south of Commercial Rd, at Illawarra on October 31 about 4pm.

Emergency services were unable to save the teenager who died at the scene.

The Year 11 Hoopers Crossing Secondary College student had five siblings and was on a camping trip with her father and his wife.

She lived with her grandmother Darlene Babinall and her younger sister Logan in Tarneit.

Ms Babinall said her granddaughter was an experienced rider and the family was “gutted” and struggling to come to terms with her death.

“We’re very numb at the moment, it was very sudden, a freak accident,” she said.

“She loved her Aboriginal culture, she loved life, she had a cheeky sense of humour, that was her … that was my Maddy.”

Ms Babinall got a tattoo dedicated to her late granddaughter on Wednesday, which she displayed on social media.

She said the family had been “overwhelmed” by the outpouring of support for a GoFundMe to cover Maddison’s funeral costs, which was started by cousin Shaynia Foley.

The fundraiser, which had a target of $7000, had raised just over $10,100 by Wednesday afternoon.

“This situation has left our whole family traumatised … our hearts are so broken,” Ms Foley wrote.

“Maddison will be forever remembered, loved and missed dearly. We thank everyone for their wishes, condolences and donations.”

Northern Grampians highway patrol officers are continuing to investigate the crash.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
